Syrian refugees could soon be getting a tuition-free junior college education if one ultra-liberal Riverside County politician has his way.

Bill Hedrick, a candidate for the Riverside Community College District Trustee with ties to a radical Islamic terrorist group , expressed his support for tuition-free college education for all on his Facebook page.

“I believe in making community college totally free — that means no fees.”

An official with the San Bernardino County Central Committee of the Democratic Party has complained about campaign literature mailed to San Bernardino residents that he said falsely implied the party had endorsed five candidates for city office, including three who are Republicans.

Applications will be available Monday for anyone interested in being appointed to the Norco City Council vacancy created by the death of Malcolm Miller.

The council voted 4-0 Wednesday to fill the vacancy through an appointment instead of a special election. The term will expire November 2011.

The PE: TEMECULA: City manager’s pay is election issue

Just five city managers in California — and only one in the Inland area — earned more than Temecula City Manager Shawn Nelson in 2009, according to a survey.

Nelson, 51, earned $336,288 last year, an amount that includes his base salary, deferred compensation and other payouts, according to the survey released last month by the League of California Cities, an advocacy group for cities and towns. Nelson’s base pay is $291,571 a year, according to Temecula.

The PE: Norco finances at ‘precarious level’ City Council told

Norco city leaders, after consistently rejecting added city-wide taxes, have proposed other solutions to balance the budget, which is projected to run out of money in May.

The shortfall in the general fund, which pays for daily operating expenses, can be temporarily bridged, said Finance Director Andy Okoro, but the account faces multi-million dollar shortfalls in 2011 and 2012 unless services are cut or revenues are increased.

Council members in 17 “general law” cities in western Riverside and San Bernardino counties earn less than half the pay of their counterparts in charter cities, a review of public records has found.

City managers in these Inland cities also make less, though the gap is smaller.

The City Council voted last week to begin negotiating the purchase of 429 acres of property on Hillside Avenue, land that was contaminated by the former Wyle Laboratories.
