The PE: REGION: Cities say they’re not going bankrupt

Officials with other Inland cities say they’re not in danger of declaring bankruptcy like San Bernardino.

It’s an obvious question after San Bernardino sought bankruptcy — is my city next?

The early answer, at least in the Inland area, is probably not. While three California cities plan to file for bankruptcy and more could follow, local officials say their finances aren’t at the breaking point.

The PE: TEMECULA: City manager’s pay is election issue

Just five city managers in California — and only one in the Inland area — earned more than Temecula City Manager Shawn Nelson in 2009, according to a survey.

Nelson, 51, earned $336,288 last year, an amount that includes his base salary, deferred compensation and other payouts, according to the survey released last month by the League of California Cities, an advocacy group for cities and towns. Nelson’s base pay is $291,571 a year, according to Temecula.

PE: Watchdog advice letter reveals potential supervisor candidate

Thanks to California’s political watchdog agency, it is now known that Lake Elsinore City Councilman Robert Magee is interested in running for a seat on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors in 2012.

Magee earlier this year sought advice from the state Fair Political Practices Commission on loaning money from his City Council campaign committee to a new account set up to run for supervisor.

A Lake Elsinore businessman and one of his former employees pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that they conspired to hide the businessman’s involvement in the failed recall attempt of a city councilman.

Michel Knight, owner of Trevi Entertainment Center, and Enelida “Nellie” Caron, who worked at Trevi, entered their pleas before Superior Court Judge Richard Fields in Riverside.

A Lake Elsinore businessman was arrested today on suspicion of conspiring to hide his involvement in the failed effort to recall Lake Elsinore City Councilman Thomas Buckley.

Riverside County district attorney’s office investigators arrested Michel Knight, 49, outside his Temecula Valley Wine Country home about 9:40 a.m.

An effort to remove Lake Elsinore Councilman Thomas Buckley from office failed Tuesday night.

With all precincts counted, just over 56 percent of the city’s voters rejected a recall effort.

“It’s a victory for the city,” Buckley said in a phone interview. “I understand my imperfection. But the people of the city understand this was about more than me. This was about being able to keep going forward and not giving into intimidation and lies.”

Voters go to the polls today in Lake Elsinore to decide whether to recall or retain Councilman Thomas Buckley.

The polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Voters will be asked whether they want to recall Buckley or keep him in office. Voters also will be asked who they want to replace Buckley with if he is recalled.

Lake Elsinore City Hall and a consultant involved in the campaign to recall a city councilman were among the six targets of search warrants obtained by district attorney’s investigators, court records show.

Warrants were obtained for City Hall, 130 S. Main St., as well as John Paul Burkett, of Wildomar, according to court records. Another warrant is for an undisclosed location.

District attorney’s investigators and federal immigration agents Thursday conducted surprise early-morning raids at properties owned by two opponents of a Lake Elsinore councilman facing recall.

Officials were tight-lipped about the raids, but one woman targeted by the investigation said authorities told her they were looking into a possible felony related to the recall.

To bridge a nearly $20 million budget shortfall, the Lake Elsinore Unified School District will need significant concessions from its unions or be forced to lay off hundreds of people and close several schools, the school board was told Thursday.

RivPE: Lake Elsinore council to consider moratorium on legal marijuana operations

The Lake Elsinore City Council will consider a proposal Tuesday to establish a 45-day moratorium on legal marijuana-growing activities in the city so it can determine how the operations can be regulated.

The proposal is in response to a request for a business license and phone inquiries to the city about establishing operations to grow, dry, farm, package, process and distribute medical marijuana on a wholesale level, according to the staff report.
