The Inland Empire’s political past and present will clash in the June 5 primary for the 35th Congressional District.

The incumbent, Rep. Norma Torres, D-Pomona, faces a challenge from former Inland Democratic congressman Joe Baca, who is making his latest attempt to return to public office after losing re-election in 2012 to Democrat Gloria Negrete McLeod.

Negrete McLeod gave up her congressional seat in 2014 to mount an unsuccessful bid for San Bernardino County supervisor. Replacing her was Torres, who also succeeded Negrete McLeod in the state Senate.

Besides Baca and Torres, the primary features a Republican, janitorial services company owner Christian Leonel Valiente.

The top two vote-getters in the primary, regardless of party, will advance to the Nov. 6 election in the race to represent a district spanning San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties, including Pomona, Montclair, Ontario, Chino and part of Rialto.
