RIALTO >> A majority of city council members said they want voters to decide on Nov. 8 who will replace former Rialto City Councilman Shawn O’Connell, who died from a medical issue June 5 in Loma Linda.
During a regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night, Rialto City Attorney Fred Galante told council members that they had an option to appoint someone, hold a special election or let voters decide during the Nov. 8 general election.
The was no item for action about that vacant seat on Tuesday’s agenda, Galante said, during an telephone interview Wednesday.
“A lot of cities just let the seats stay vacant, in situations like this, when there is only a few months until an election,” Galante said.
O’Connell was at the end of his first term on the council and was planning to run for re-election, Rialto officials say.
“My opinion is that we do nothing and let individuals run for the seat, making a fair playing field” for the November election, said Councilman Ed Scott, in a telephone interview Wednesday.
