The San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday appointed board chairman James Ramos and vice chairman Robert Lovingood to serve on a committee that will appoint a successor to Auditor-Controller/Treasurer/Tax Collector Larry Walker, who retires on March 5.

Those interested in applying have one week to do so. The deadline to apply is Jan. 29. Ramos and Lovingood will review all applications and resumes, then select Walker’s replacement before he retires, Ramos said.

“I think it’s in the best interest of this board to appoint that person prior to March 4,” Ramos said.

One person has already come forward expressing interest in the job: Ensen Mason, who unsuccessfully ran against Walker for the position in 2014. Mason said he has owned a public accounting firm in Redlands for more than 25 years and is a registered investment adviser.

“This position requires a strong background in both accounting and finance,” Mason told the board during Wednesday’s meeting. “I feel I am uniquely qualified for the position because I have education, credentials, and experience in both accounting and finance.”

Walker, who served for 12 years as the county’s 4th District supervisor and is also a former councilman and mayor of Chino, announced his retirement on Jan. 13, bringing to a close nearly 40 years of public service in the county.
