Colton >> City officials are wrapping up final steps this week related to last week’s firing of City Manager Stephen Compton.

Assistant City Attorney Marco Martinez said this week the city is preparing a release that Compton is required to sign in order to receive severance pay of $64,000, which is four months of base pay, according to the terms of his employment contract with the city. No other benefits are provided in the contract, said Martinez.

Compton, 60, of Redlands, was officially let go Aug. 21 when the Colton City Council voted unanimously to approve a resolution terminating him. The firing happened after a personnel investigation found that he overspent his authority in contracts by approving $23,000 more than his $25,000 limit, and hired temporary employees without following proper procedures. But at least one council member said the city wanted someone with a different management style.
