Colton >> The City Council has voted unanimously to fire City Manager Stephen Compton.

The council voted to terminate him after more than 2-1/2 hours behind closed doors at a special meeting Thursday night.

Councilman David Toro made a motion, seconded by Councilman Isaac Suchil, to support a resolution to terminate Compton.

Compton has not returned repeated calls for comment.

Mayor Sarah Zamora read a prepared statement that included this: “The City Council has concluded that it is in the city’s best interest to pursue a different direction with a new city manager.”

Zamora declined to comment further, adding only that the council is privy to information that the public is not.

A personnel investigation began when officials placed Compton on paid administrative leave June 5 as he was investigating financial problems with the city. One of those problems came to light this week and prompted the council to consider an in-depth audit of the city’s finances.

An outside workplace investigator presented results of the Aug. 4 inquiry after two months, finding that Compton had approved $23,000 more than his $25,000 limit in contracts, and hired temporary employees without following proper procedures.
