COLTON >> City Manager Stephen Compton will be terminated without providing a reason, officials decided Tuesday night at a City Council meeting.

The council expects to take final action at a special meeting today by approving a resolution.

Council members voted unanimously to support the termination around 11 p.m. Tuesday in closed session after a regular city council meeting, according to officials in the city clerk’s office.

Compton did not immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.

The council had placed Compton on paid administrative leave in June following a personnel investigation that determined earlier this month he had approved $23,000 more than his $25,000 limit in contracts and hired temporary employees without following proper procedures.

He has denied any wrongdoing and said he needed the contracts to look into financial problems at the city, such as the accounting mistake that came to light Tuesday triggering a request by council for an in-depth audit of city books.

Since Compton’s departure, rotating department heads have been serving as city manager for two-week periods, a practice that is expected to continue until a city manager can be found.

Reactions from community members varied.
