COLTON >> For two months the City Council waited for results from a personnel investigation into its city manager.

Now that those results are in – City Manager Stephen Compton had approved $23,000 more than his $25,000 limit in contracts and hired temporary employees without following proper procedures – his fate is in the council’s hands.

Compton has denied any wrongdoing.

As of last week, the city’s top administrator was still on paid administrative leave, as he has been since June 5 when the inquiry was launched,

Now, the council has several options. It can terminate Compton without cause, he can resign or officials can allow Compton to return to his position as city manager. They can also terminate him with cause and approve a resolution of termination, according to Assistant City Attorney Marco Martinez.
