SAN BERNARDINO >> Rising costs for the construction and staffing of the Adelanto Detention Center continue to be front and center in San Bernardino County’s budget.

During a presentation of the county’s first quarterly budget report last month, Deputy Executive Officer Katrina Turturro told the Board of Supervisors that an additional $4.81 million is needed for steadily increasing construction costs of the $144 million Adelanto Detention Center. The work is being done by Washington-based Lydig Construction.

The state is providing $100 million for the project and the county $44 million. To date, the state has doled out $80 million of the $100 million for the jail, according to a Board of Supervisors staff report.

A grand opening is scheduled for Feb. 6 at the High Desert jail, sheriff’s spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said.

Budget adjustments of $7.3 million are needed to cover one-time startiup costs and 68 new positions at the Adelanto Detention Center. The costs will be covered by AB 109 growth funds.
