SAN BERNARDINO >> Two new officials and dozens more residents than typically attend a City Council meeting packed the house Monday for the swearing-in of Gary Saenz as city attorney and Jim Mulvihill as councilman.
Saenz and Mulvihill replace James F. Penman and Wendy McCammack, respectively, after those two officials were recalled in the Nov. 5 election.
Mulvihill, a retired Cal State San Bernardino professor and a member of the Planning Commission until his election, gave a speech of about two minutes, saying he was encouraged and somewhat surprised by the high attendance.
“That’s our opportunity: a new future for San Bernardino, a city that people want to come to,” Mulvihill said.
The future, rather than the past, needs to be the focus, he said.
“There’s some here who cling to memories of some long ago past San Bernardino where everything is wonderful,” he said. “Time machines are wonderful to think about, but it really doesn’t match our reality.”
