Mike Ramos

Saturday, October 26, 2013 – 11:30 a.m.

San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos held his reelection campaign kickoff fundraiser, at the Ontario Doubletree Hotel, Thursday night.

An event headlined by California Attorney General Kamala Harris.

A few takes from observers and donors.

  • The number in attendance at the event, was pegged, at the most, near 125. More than half of that number was comprised of Ramos underlings and, union members. Not a good sign.
  • Other than the AG, and a few local politicians, no real heavy-hitter donors were there. A major difference from a 2012 Ramos fundraiser, headlined by the Governor.
  • The stated take, made by the campaign, in a morning-after Daily Bulletin article, was $100,000. A somewhat dubious figure considering the number of people attending, just to give the appearance of a good showing.

Because Ramos didn’t plan on seeking reelection in 2014, his campaign war chest stood at just over $150,000, as of June 30, 2013. New campaign finance limits inhibit Ramos’ ability to secure more than $4,100 from any one donor source, before the June 2014 primary. A development that levels the playing field with his only announced challenger, Deputy District Attorney Grover Merritt.

One attendee says that poliicians are reaching for deep pockets that just aren’t there any longer, due to the economy and business climate.

On a side note, Sacramento-based Lobbyist Brett Granlund, with Wal-Mart Debit Card and TracFone in hand, made it to the event to lend his support to his long-time friend. So much for that self-imposed exile to Mexico!
