Conservatives say they won a small victory when California Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed what they called “the most draconian” gun bill in the nation — but they insisted that Brown’s role in signing “the strictest set of gun control laws” in America could prompt recall efforts in California.
We got a quick reaction from Jennifer Kerns, the California political consultant who helped lead the Colorado recalls recently. She tells us that gun rights advocates “are grateful” that Brown vetoed SB 374 (by Senator Darrell Steinberg),” which she called “draconian.” The bill would have banned future sales of most semi-automatic rifles.
But Brown signed a host of other gun legislation, she said, and “we believe there will be a political price to pay for this, either in recall elections or in the Governor’s approval ratings — just as we have seen in similar blue-state Governors such as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper who both fell 15 points in the polls after signing similar gun bills.”
