SAN BERNARDINO >> Sitting in his office beside an American flag, District Attorney Michael A. Ramos announced Wednesday his intention to run for re-election next year.
Ramos, who has held office since 2003, said he’s received several opportunities to run for other political offices, but has turned them down in order to continue as San Bernardino County district attorney.
“It’s been an honor to serve this county as dstrict attorney,” Ramos said. “There are still things I want to accomplish and finish what we’ve started in many areas of this office.”
Under his leadership, the DA’s office has created several task forces, which include units targeting major crimes against children and crimes against peace officers.
“I think there’s more to be done regarding human trafficking,” he said. “The gangs are getting more and more involved with trafficking these girls, abusing them over and over and over.”
Ranked by the FBI as the third worst in the United States for gang activity, San Bernardino County has placed 13 injunctions in several areas in an attempt to curb gang violence.
“I think the injunctions work for the territorial gangs that have been around for decades,” Ramos said. “In the places where we’ve put in the gang injunctions we have cleaned up the neighborhoods. Gang members were coming in and dealing drugs in the middle of the day, carrying guns, and after the injunctions went into place it stopped.”
Transitory gangs are the bigger issue, he said.
