Retired employees from the city of San Bernardino have formed their own grassroots group, the San Bernardino Retired Public Employees Association, to fight to protect their pensions in the wake of the city’s bankruptcy filing.

The group, which is roughly 70 members and composed mainly of retired police officers, will hold its first meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 25 in the offices of San Bernardino International Airport, 1595 E. Art Townsend Drive on the southwest corner of Third and Del Rosa streets.

“The primary reason is to promote fellowship among all city retirees and to ensure the preservation of our retirement benefits,” said Jeff Breiten, a retired police captain who helped form the group.
