Roberta Shouse, the executive director of the Legal Aid Society of San Bernardino, lost her battle with cancer July 4.
Shouse, who was 69, had been the director of the nonprofit Legal Aid Society since 1978. The society provides the poorest in the county with access to justice.
A New York native who lived in San Bernardino for more than 42 years, Shouse began running pro bono legal clinics 32 years ago because of her interest in the law.
Margaret Hill, a San Bernardino City Unified School District board member, said, “Roberta lived and breathed the Legal Aid Society. She always did all she could to help people.”
Attorneys with the Legal Aid Society give free advice to the needy on wills and trusts, bankruptcies and civil-litigation issues.
Barbara Babcock, a friend who worked with Shouse on a variety of community-service projects, said Shouse brought joy to everyone.
