High Desert voters will see a crowded field seeking to replace San Bernardino County Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt in the 1st District.

Following Mitzelfelt’s announcement Thursday that he will run for Congress due to the retirement of Rep. Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, four candidates have announced plans to run in the June 5 election.

They include Hesperia Mayor Russell Blewett, former Apple Valley Mayor Mark Shoup, Adelanto school board trustee Jermaine Wright and Ken Anderson, a field representative for Mitzelfelt.

The candidates hit on common themes of creating jobs and improving the county’s fiscal situation.

“The High Desert needs a strong representative,” Blewett said. “I have probably the most experience anybody probably could have in the race.”

Blewett, a homebuilder, also served as a county planning commissioner appointed by Mitzelfelt and mayor of the Los Angeles County city of Baldwin Park in the 1970s.
