By election guru Allan Hoffenblum’s reckoning, there could be a record number of open seats up for grabs in this year’s elections, including 33 of the 80 state Assembly posts.

Hoffenblum, a former GOP strategist who publishes the nonpartisan California Target Book that tracks congressional and legislative races, also expects there will be seven open seats in the state Senate, where 20 positions will be on the ballot, and at least nine or 10 in the state’s 53-member House delegation.
