UPLAND – The school district’s board of trustees has approved a 2011-12 fiscal year budget that includes furloughs for employees and fewer school days.

Upland Unified’s new budget, which has a positive ending balance of $519,751, has savings of about $1.8 million from a nine-day reduction in the work year for all district employees.

The furloughs consist of five school days and four teacher in-service days.

The days are Nov. 21, 22 and 23; Jan. 3 and 23; March 26; April 13 and 16 and May 25

The district did not send out layoff notices to teachers during the current fiscal year, but there are about 12 probationary teachers who were let go for the next school year, said Sherri Black, assistant superintendent of human resources.

However, there are about five of those teachers who may be returning.

“Actually, I’ve started recalling some (last) week,” Black said. “I’m hoping I will be able to hire them all back this year.”

The district calculated in a 5 percent increase in health and welfare costs, as opposed to the 10 percent increase that was originally proposed, Black said.
