Why all the effort to make it look like Attorney General Kamala Harris handled the investigation leading to the charges filed against San Bernardino County Third District Supervisor Neil Derry?
Because the investigation was in fact handled by investigators for District Attorney Mike Ramos.
The following quote found in stories, which were published today in local newspapers, says it all.
“The state Attorney General’s Office handled the Derry case to avoid any appearance of unfairness or impropriety due to the different positions on various issues taken by the District Attorney’s Office and Derry in the last two years”
Sources close to the situation say the DA Public Integrity Unit handled the Derry investigative phase, from start to finish, and dished it off to Harris’ office to file charges.
To much information related to contradictory statements by witnesses in the Derry matter is said to be already making the rounds.
Issues surrounding coached statements to flat out selectively using snip-its of interviews will play into this case.
A case where if the facts were even remotely true, and having occurred in a county with no campaign finance limits, would garner nothing more than a slap-on-the-hand from the California fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC).
That’s if your a friend of the DA. In which case Ramos would have simply referred Derry to the FPPC with a recommendation.
