SAN BERNARDINO • Tuesday 1st District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt hopes to take the helm as chairman of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, but he’s not sure whether he’ll get the votes to beat 4th District Supervisor Josie Gonzales in landing the leadership post.

County supervisors are set to elect a new chair at the beginning of Tuesday’s board meeting in San Bernardino.

Mitzelfelt — who represents the High Desert and has made it known he wants the role — has the support of 3rd District Neil Derry, while current Vice Chairwoman Gonzales has the backing of outgoing Board Chairman Gary Ovitt.

That pegs the deciding vote on newly elected 2nd District Supervisor Janice Rutherford.

Rutherford declined a Monday request for comment, with her spokesman Scott VanHorne saying she planned to announce her choice at today’s meeting.
