This evening thirty candidates remain in the jury pool for the retrial of former San Bernardino County Assessor employee and Rancho Cucamonga City Councilman Rex Gutierrez.
Gutierrez is charged with three felonies related to alleged time card fraud during his employment under former Assessor Bill Postmus.
Unlike the previous trial, Deputy Attorney General Melissa Mandel has so far handled the questioning for the people instead of Deputy District Attorney John Goritz.
The change may be signaling the new significance the case has to Attorney General Jerry Brown, who has fallen under recent criticism for using his position as Attorney General to grandstand in his race for Governor against republican Meg Whitman.
Mandel, an attorney of 18 years, displayed an abrasive style which appeared to irritate juror’s in the first trial even though her involvment was minimal.
The remaining pool of mostly white juror candidates consists primarily of school teachers and government employees.
Testimony is expected to commence Wednesday morning.
