The Bell City Council has opted not to hire the attorney who approved huge salaries for the city’s leaders.

Edward Lee, who parted company Monday with Riverside-based law firm Best Best & Krieger, had said he made the move in part to stay with Bell and work with its officials through the salary crisis.

The law firm simultaneously announced it was ending it city attorney contract with Bell, and would work with Lee through the transition.

But the council voted Wednesday not to appoint Lee as its interim city attorney. Lee had served as Bell’s contract city attorney since the 1990s.

The council decided to have another lawyer, James Casso, serve in the position.
