Jerry Brown’s gubernatorial campaign filed its campaign report — early, we note with some degree of surprise — and they’ve got $20 million cash on hand. With Jerry et al working the phones, Team Jerry raised $6.8 million in the reporting period between March 18 and May 22.
Ordinarily that would be a lot of cash — like when there aren’t billionaires and demi-billionaires in the race. But this isn’t one of those years.
GOP state insurance commissioner Steve Poizner has $2.9 million in cash, but that figure is largely irrelevant when the question is: How much more does he want to spend to win. Dude sold his company in 2000 for $1 billion. It’s there. He spent $17 million this period — mostly on TV ads — to climb back into relevance in the race.
