It’s been almost 10 months since Gov. Jerry Brown revealed his 12-point pension plan, and Californians are still waiting on the Legislature to pass public employee pension reform. While legislative Democrats continue to assert that they’re serious about enacting reforms to address our unsustainable pension system, their actions tell a different story.

Legislation by state Sen. Bill Emmerson that would let counties raise recording fees on certain real-estate documents didn’t get a warm welcome Monday from many of his fellow Republicans in the Assembly.
The bill by Emmerson, R-Hemet, would allow counties to increase real-estate recording fees from $3 to $10, with the extra money paying to beef up real-estate fraud protection and prosecution. The California District Attorneys Association sponsored the measure.

Californians have made it clear that they support key reforms to our unsustainable public employee pension system. According to a recent poll by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California, 83 percent of Californians agree that our state’s pension problems must be addressed. With the average debt of both state and county pensions at $30,500 for each California household, it’s no wonder that an overwhelming majority of Californians are demanding reform.

Editor’s note: This is the second of a three-part series looking at the newly redrawn Inland Empire legislative districts for state Senate. Sunday’s installment was Congress; Tuesday will examine the Assembly. Recently redrawn state Senate lines likely won’t see a major shift of power in the Inland Empire from Republicans to Democrats.
Despite being in the minority in Sacramento, GOP senators have enjoyed a majority in the Inland Empire for years and that trend is unlikely to change.
The 14-member California Citizens Redistricting Commission introduced the redrawn maps in July.
