ONTARIO >> International passenger traffic continues to see a sizable growth at L.A./Ontario International Airport, according to figures released Thursday by Los Angeles World Airports.
Jess Romo, the airport’s manager, attributes the 21.5 percent increase in international traffic in the first three months to seasonal adjustments by low-cost Mexican carriers Aeromexico and Volaris.
“The Mexican carriers are pretty smart about where they put flights,” he said. “International traffic percentage-wise is pretty healthy; the numbers are not huge, but they continue to climb.”
ONT handled 33,568 international passengers from January to March, a jump of nearly 6,000 more from 2015.
Another sector which continues to see an increase is in air cargo, which saw a 12 percent increase in the first three months this versus the first quarter in 2015, Romo said.
Cargo volume in the first three months of 2016 was 132,538 tons, up from 114,112 tons in the first quarter of 2015.
“Cargo numbers continue to be very strong — since 2010 — we are in our seventh year of increase in cargo,” he said.
