San Bernardino County Auditor-Controller Larry Walker is retiring.

Walker announced his retirement Wednesday, saying he will hang up his hat on his 38-year public service career on March 5.

“With mixed emotions and strong feelings, I have decided that now is the time to retire,” Walker said in a written statement. “This has been a difficult decision, arrived at over many months of thoughtful and prayerful consideration. I cannot single out a specific factor or a major reason — I have simply decided that, for my family, for the county, and for me, this is the right time to go.”

Walker began his career in public service after being elected to the Chino City Council in 1978. Two years later, he was elected mayor of that city.

In June 1986, Walker was elected to the 4th District county supervisor seat, where he held that position for 12 years. From there on Board of Supervisors, he took on his current role.
