HESPERIA — The City Council voted in closed session prior to Tuesday evening’s regular meeting to appoint Nils Bentsen to the position of city manager.

City Attorney Eric Dunn announced the council’s appointment of Bentsen at the start of the meeting.

Bentsen is currently the captain of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Hesperia Station and will take his seat in council chambers “sometime in January,” according to Mayor Bill Holland, who introduced Bentsen during the meeting.

The council voted 4-1 on Bentsen’s appointment; Councilman Eric Schmidt cast the lone “no” vote. It was unclear Tuesday evening as to why Schmidt’s vote was in opposition to the other councilmembers.

Bentsen will replace Mike Podegracz who served as Hesperia’s city manager for 10 years and announced his retirement in July.
