San Bernardino Seal

RIVERSIDE >> San Bernardino has a tentative contract agreement with its largest employee group, the so-called general unit, the city’s bankruptcy attorney announced in court Tuesday.

Coming on the heels of a much-anticipated agreement with the Police Officers Association that police and the City Council agreed to a month ago, a contract with the general unit means the city has agreements with nearly all employees, with the notable exception of firefighters.

Multiple legal complaints by the fire union against the city continue, with the next decision — stemming from the city rejecting its bargaining agreement with the fire union and implementing changes, including fire station closures — expected Sept. 17.

Meanwhile, the city is moving forward with the process of being annexed into a county fire protection district, giving San Bernardino County Fire responsibility for fire and emergency medical response by the beginning of the next fiscal year July 1.

That’s expected to add more than $12 million to the bankrupt city’s coffers — $4.7 million in savings and $7.8 million in revenue from a parcel tax — said the city’s bankruptcy attorney, Paul Glassman.
