Extending state-subsidized healthcare coverage to people in the country illegally could cost California as much as $740 million annually, according to a Senate fiscal analysis released Monday.
The report affixes a price tag to the proposal for the first time since Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) introduced his bill last December.
Researchers at UC Berkeley and UCLA estimate that, in California, about 1.8 million people who are in the country illegally lack healthcare coverage. Around 1.5 million of them would qualify for Medi-Cal.
The analysis lays out two scenarios to calculate the proposal’s cost. Under the status quo, the increase in Medi-Cal spending would range from $280 million to $740 million annually. The report estimates that between 50-60% of eligible immigrants would enroll in the healthcare program.
The report also examines how President Obama’s recent executive order offering deportation relief to certain immigrants would affect the measure’s cost. If the order — currently on hold due to a court injunction — is upheld, around 900,000 immigrants in the state would qualify, according to the analysis, and would be eligible for Medi-Cal and other state programs.

Obamacare is NOT available to those in the country illegal. (Regardless what Fox News says) – it simply is not available to them.
We as Californians pick up the tab when these families go to the emergency room and rack up bills at emergency room prices.
IF Obamacare was extended to illegals, (I would prefer MASSIVE deportation myself, but that ain’t ever goanna happen)
IF Obamacare was extended to illegals, then medical bills would be at a general office visit price rather than an emergency room price (HUGE savings) ***AND*** Obamacare would subsidize it, meaning Federal Money into California… lowering the cost to all Californians.
Extending state-subsidized healthcare coverage to people in the country illegally could cost California as much as $740 million annually….
Not Extending state-subsidized healthcare coverage to people in the country illegally will still cost California as much as $740 million annually…
Stop arguing life they way things oughta be, but rather argue life the way things are.
And stop being suckers-
#1… what a comedian you are. Where do federal tax dollars come from? The sky?
The money comes from OUR taxes.
Thats like saying, “I’m saving lots of water! I like 45 minute showers, so I take them at the gym, and not at home!”
1. Why do you keep voting for these reparations legislators?
2. Since these legislators believe they are “foreign diplomats” they ought to go to Mexico/Central America and demand funds to provide services to their citizens living here ‘in the shadows’–where we can’t seem to find them. They could divert funds from drug cartel seizures of cash, a percentage of remittances sent from workers, in this country, to families remaining in Mexico/Central America, or the USA could look at how much we are spending on foreign aid and the Merida Initiative and divert to states providing healthcare.
3. GOP keeps failing on this issue, tambien. As long as GOP spends on big business playing crony capitalism footsie, my kinfolk refuse to be unkind to the living here without papers.
Very valid point. In fact it crossed my mind as I typed it.
We have to look at it like this. (A very crude example)
Every dollar that a Mexican will use getting healthcare through Obamacare WILL NOT cost Californians that entire dollar when paying federal taxes.
Federal taxes are supposed to be spread out evenly across the entire country so that each state feels support from the other 49)
Because California has ALOT of Mexicans, we will probably see an influx from Federal dollars that are set aside to pay for Obamacare to Mexicans.
Each citizen across America will have to pay a tiny little portion to the “Keeping Mexicans Healthy Fund” – including Californians.
It will be distributed to ‘per Mexican’-
Because California has the most Mexicans, we will get the majority of that money, regardless of how little the State paid into that particular pot.
For once, California may actually pull more federal dollars in for something than putting out.
If we are going to be forced to pay anyway….
That’s exactly what I am saying. For once California will be able to offset our internal costs externally.
Reword your statement and you and I are on the same page.
That’s like saying, “I’m saving lots of money! I like 45 minute showers, so I take them at the gym, and not at home!” – Therefore the gym pays for my water rather than me. Exactly.
I am seriously SICK and TIRED of Californins having to subsidize the RED states.
Check this out:
For every dollar these states contribute to the national treasure, here is what they get back for welfare, food stamps and other Federal Assistance.
Louisiana pays $1 gets back $1.37
Arizona pays $1 gets back $1.47
West Virginia pays $1 gets back $1.91
Montana pays $1 gets back $1.24
Alabama pays $1 gets back $2.46
Kentucky pays $1 gets back $2.18
Mississippi pays $1 gets back $2.34
New Mexico pays $1 gets back $2.19
Californians get 68 cent back for every dollar we put into the Federal Fund to support the red states; it’s about time we concocted an idea that gets those dollars back into our economy.
Oh snap! And this whole time Conservatives have been complaining about supporting lazy liberals when it has been the other way around.
Nice job by the way. I did not know how that worked.
That does infuriate me that one state can take money from another. And what should have been a conservative platform is in fact a problem the conservative states have caused. This should be taken care of.
