As expected, the U.S. Department of Justice has entered into Thursday’s tape recorded use of force incident caught on tape by Los Angeles-based KNBC-TV 4, involving San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies, who appear to use excessive force in the apprehension of a suspect after a long pursuit involving an automobile and horseback.

Minutes after the California Public Utilities Commission levied a record $1.6 billion penalty against Pacific Gas and Electric Co. on Thursday for the deadly San Bruno pipeline explosion, the state’s top regulator said the utility is still plagued by gas-system problems, shrugs off even the harshest sanctions and may be too big to operate safely.

Orange County officials Thursday called for the resignation of a superior court judge who cut 15 years off the minimum 25 year sentence of a man convicted of sodomizing a 3-year-old girl.
