SAN BERNARDINO >> City Attorney Gary Saenz announced his re-election bid Friday, making it the first official campaign announcement going into the city’s November 2015 election.
Saenz came into office in November 2013, following the election that month that recalled James F. Penman after 26 years as city attorney. Of two vying to fill that vacancy, voters chose Saenz over attorney Tim Prince.
The former real estate attorney’s campaign platform from that election — providing neutral legal advice and staying out of policy decisions — is the promise for the next term as well, with the additional message that he’ll ensure smooth operations.
“I think the earlier the better,” Saenz said, of the timing of the announcement, “so that people know I intend to run and the people have confidence that there’s some continuity and that we’ll continue the path I started in 2013.”
In Saenz’s view, that path was validated when a “core group” formed as part of the city’s strategic planning process said the recommended that the city’s elected officials sign onto an “interim charter agreement” that would realign their roles.
