Kamala Harris

Monday, January 12, 2015 – 05:30 p.m.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Barbara Boxer, who announced last week that she would not seek another term in 2016.

Harris, a Democrat, was sworn into office for a second term just last week.

Earlier this morning, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom, also a Democrat, announced he would not be seeking the Boxer seat. His announcement raises the likelihood he will run for Governor in 2018.

So far, only Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has indicated an interest in running for the Boxer seat. Many other prospects are expected to announce their interest in running in the coming weeks.

Another interesting card in play is a decision by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-California) as to whether or not she will seek another six-year term in 2018.
