Paul Zellerbach

Thursday, January 8, 2015 – 01:45 p.m.

Former Riverside County District Attorney Paul Zellerbach has pleaded “No Contest” to a single count of Vandalism (Tampering with Campaign Signs), a misdemeanor.

The no-contest plea carries the same legal weight as guilty.

Wednesdays conviction is related to an Indio Police Department investigation into Zellerbach tampering with challenger-turned-District Attorney Mike Hestrin’s campaign signs. Tampering that was caught on video surveillance recordings.

Ultimately Zellerbach lost to Hestrin last fall after the tampering revelations erupted.

Zellerbach’s alleged misuse of county resources apparently fell by the wayside. He will pay a nominal fine, serve informal probation and perform community service.

It’s likely this deal was already hammered out before Zellerbach left office.

The California Attorney General handled the case.
