UPLAND >> Unable to gain a majority approval; the City Council Monday night voted down a six-month contract for an interim police chief.

For more than 30 minutes the council deliberated the best option to fill the impending vacancy of Police Chief Jeff Mendenhall, who will retire at the end of the month.

The City Council was considering a recommendation by City Manager Rod Butler to have Mendenhall serve as interim chief for at least six months.
