APPLE VALLEY — It was a wedding in tropical paradise for two people who’ve spent much of their lives in the local political spotlight.
Victorville Councilwoman Angela Valles said she tied the knot with former Apple Valley Councilman Rick Roelle under a waterfall in Maui, Hawaii, on Thursday with their children, grandchildren and both mothers in attendance.
“It was a traditional Maui wedding where they blew the conch shell and we exchanged tropical leis as a sign of love for each other,” Valles said. “It was like a dream come true.”
Valles, 46, who works as the director of finance for the Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority, said the lovebirds will depart for the Hawaiian island of Kauai on Saturday for a seven-day honeymoon.
“This was our second marriage for both of us, so we wanted to keep it low-key — that’s why I suggested Las Vegas,” Valles said. “But Rick insisted that we get married in the most beautiful place in the world.”
The couple decided that they couldn’t get married if Valles was on the Victorville City Council for another four years. Valles said she chose Roelle instead of running for re-election in November because she could not make a full commitment to both.
“After the ceremony, it was a great feeling to be married to the one I love,” said Roelle, 55, a former lieutenant with the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department who retired in August after 32 years. “I said that I would never do it again, but love is a powerful thing.”
