Democrats Pete Aguilar and Norma Torres, the Inland Empire’s newly elected congressional members, will spend the next few days learning the ins and outs of Washington during the new member orientation.

Aguilar, the mayor of Redlands, and Torres, a state legislator and former Pomona mayor, have yet to be sworn into their new positions in the House of Representatives, but have joined the 50-plus other new congressional members in Washington to prepare for when they take office in January.

“It’s just an honor to be representing our region in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Aguilar said via a telephone call from Washington on Friday. “I’m trying to learn as much as I possibly can during this orientation portion, on setting up my office and providing good constituent services to residents in San Bernardino County.”

The freshman Congress members-elect arrived Wednesday. The orientation continues through Thursday.
