ONTARIO >> Councilman Alan Wapner is concerned politics is starting to get in the way of public safety at L.A./Ontario International Airport.

Ontario and Los Angeles are in the midst of a contentious court battle for control of ONT, and Wapner believes that is the reason Los Angeles World Airports excluded local agencies during a weekend drill.

Law enforcement agencies from Los Angeles World Airports and Los Angeles participated in an active shooter drill in the old terminal over the weekend.

Wapner, who is the city’s liaison with the airport, said Ontario was neither advised of the drill nor invited to participate.

“For them to do an exercise without including our police and fire was a waste of time,” said Wapner Monday afternoon.

The drill, referred to as the Multi-Assault Counter-Terrorism Action Capabilities, was for LAWA and LAX and took place in Terminal 1 of the airport, said Sgt. Karla Ortiz, with Los Angeles Airport Police, which is a division of LAWA.
