The contest to replace retiring San Bernardino County Supervisor Gary Ovitt is heading into the final stretch, with one candidate making a push to overcome a serious funding disadvantage.

Campaign finance disclosure reports, reflecting activity through September 30, show State Assemblyman Curt Hagman (R-Chino Hills) outpacing U.S. Representative Gloria Negeret-McLeod (D-Chino) in the race to take the seat for the 4th Supervisorial District.

But Hagman has been working from behind the whole time in order to overcome Negrete-McLeod starting balance of almost $1 million held over from her State Senate officeholder account. A pretty much impossible task.

Major labor groups have also been lending support to Negrete-McLoed through independent expenditures. It’s another factor working against Hagman. The Service Employees International Union spent more than a half-million dollars supproting Negrete-McLeod in the June primary election.

Nothing is impossible. But the road is sure a tough one for Hagman. Low turnout, as always, could be a factor in his favor.

Here’s the updated totals.
