APPLE VALLEY — Organizers announced Friday that a fundraising “roast” of San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon planned for later this month at Sunset Hills has been canceled.
“The sheriff had questions about the appropriateness of his appearance because one of the sponsoring organizations was a political action committee,” event chairman Cliff Earp wrote in a news release. “We were overwhelmed with the response to the event because it was planned as a way to support the Apple Valley Police Activities League (AVPAL), but the group doing most of the leg work on permits and set-up (Neighbors United) is a well-known local PAC and that set off alarm bells at the Sheriff’s office.”
