SAN BERNARDINO >> The city and the San Bernardino Police Officers Association announced to U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Meredith Jury that they have reached a tentative long-term agreement, officials said.

The terms of the agreement are confidential and subject to the gag order imposed by Judge Jury.

“This is an important step forward towards emerging from bankruptcy,” said Michael McKinney, Mayor Carey Davis’ chief of staff.

“It brings long-term stability for the San Bernardino Police Officers Association members and the city,” McKinney said.

Detective Steve Turner, the police union president, and Mayor Davis could not be reached for comment.

Ward 5 Councilman Henry Nickel said the police officers’ contract “is the biggest piece of the pie next to CalPERS (the California Public Employees’ Retirement System).”

An interim agreement with CalPERS, which is San Bernardino’s largest creditor, has been reached.

Nickel said the city’s bankruptcy emergence strategy has been to work on the “most complex aspects first.”
