ONTARIO >> Local officials say they continue to make progress with Los Angeles in negotiating for control of LA/Ontario International Airport.

Last month Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti publicly stated he was in favor of returning control of the airport to a local authority, as long as both sides can reach a mutually agreeable price.

Ontario International Airport Authority President Alan Wapner said he “is really excited” about the status of the negotiations and the direction it is going.

“This is as close as we’ve gotten to a deal– at least we agree on policy deals. It’s a matter of will the numbers be able to work out,” he said Monday morning during the authority’s monthly meeting at Ontario City Hall.

Authority commissioner Jim Bowman said he has noticed a tremendous difference in the negotiations since the change in administration in Los Angeles more than a year ago.

“It’s very refreshing, and (Garcetti’s) very committed,” he said. “The deal points are becoming very narrow, and I think they are very accomplishable.”

On Monday, officials with OIAA announced they launched a new video on the SetONTFree.com website to acknowledge the public support for local control the authority has received from Garcetti and Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif. The video includes statements made by both politicians on the airport issue.

“In this long journey we’ve been on, there hasn’t been a lot of positive notes that we can play on,” Wapner said.
