Redlands Tea Party Patriots board member John Berry on Wednesday called for a recount in the 31st Congressional District primary race on behalf of Republican Lesli Gooch, who finished 209 votes behind Democrat Pete Aguilar, according to the certified election count.

Aguilar or Gooch will oppose Republican Paul Chabot House seat in the November general election. Chabot finished more than 5,000 votes ahead of all other candidates.

The district covers an area from Upland in the west to Redlands in the east.

Berry said he distrusted the county registrar of voters after a previous interaction, was a Gooch supporter and thought Aguilar’s policies would be damaging.

“Basically, I would be doing all of America a favor if I knocked Pete Aguilar out of the race for Congress,” Berry said.

The Gooch campaign will pay for the recount at the beginning of each day of counting, said her campaign manager, Jeff Stinson.
