Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Bakersfield), as expected, was selected Republican Majority Leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, Thursday afternnon.

The position of Republican Whip, the No. 3 position in the House, went to Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana).

McCarthy was widely-expected to garner the votes to succeed Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Virginia), who unexpectedly lost his primary to a Tea Party-backed newcomer.

McCarthy’s rise means more trouble for Governor Jerry Brown’s $70 billion high-speed rail project.
