UPLAND >> Mayor Ray Musser defended his decision to cancel a town hall meeting this week, saying all elected city officials needed to attend.

Musser, who was on the East Coast for the funeral service of a family member, said he hopes to have a rescheduled town hall meeting date announced at Monday’s council meeting.

But not before he had some criticism for those on the dais who questioned his move.

“If other people think the meeting is more important than being together, as a total council, I have some difficulty with that. It’s sort of that they think that they are in charge,” Musser said.

When Musser learned last week that he could not attend the town hall gathering, he said he decided to poll the council if they wanted to proceed.

Musser said he asked a city staff member to ask the council and if the majority was opposed to the idea he would cancel. The mayor said he does not know who voted.

“Normally, in an organization when you cancel a meeting, you go along and you cooperate. I’m very disappointed especially if some on the council are planning to attend the meeting when the council said ‘no’ to the meeting,” he said, referring to Saturday’s question-and-answer session organized by resident Eric Gavin.
