An independent committee, sponsored by the Service Employees International Union, is spending half of a million dollars in support of Rep. Gloria Negrete McLeod’s bid for Fourth District County Supervisor.

The San Bernardino County Homecare Workers United for Gloria Negrete McLeod for Supervisor 2014, sponsored by the SEIU United Long Term Care Workers, filed the independent expenditure Wednesday.

“There are over 16,000 homecare providers in San Bernardino County who care for seniors, veterans and people with disabilities every day,” said Scott Mann, spokesman for the independent expenditure. “They want to elect a supervisor who has a record of taking care and protecting seniors and veterans. That candidate is Gloria Negrete McLeod.”

A representative for McLeod’s campaign on Tuesday said the campaign would not be providing comment on the independent expenditure.

As of 2012, the county passed an ordinance limiting campaign contributions to $4,100.

“Independent Expenditures can spend as much money as they want endorsing a candidate as long as they don’t coordinate their efforts with the campaign,” said Douglas Johnson, a research fellow at the Rose Institute of State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College. “The real result of this has been campaigns are to a large extent no longer controlled by the candidate. Most of the spending ends up in these independent expenditures.”
