UPLAND >> A town hall meeting scheduled for Saturday at Gibson Senior Center has been canceled due to a death in Mayor Ray Musser’s family.
City Council and staff were notified Monday morning about the change after learning Musser would be traveling to Pennsylvania this weekend to attend the funeral services.
The meeting has not been rescheduled but efforts are underway to identify a new date. The city’s website, electronic billboard at the front of the building and social media are being updated to inform residents, said Colleen Sendldorfer, executive assistant to the city manager.
Councilman Gino Filippi said he wanted the meeting to proceed as planned.
“I’m eager to get these under way, but I suppose delays can’t be avoided,” he said.
Aimed at resolving questions and concerns on a wide range of issues, the council earlier this year started discussing plans to hold a series of town hall meetings. The idea for a town hall meeting came after a series of tense and almost chaotic City Council meetings in which members of the public at times resorted to yelling, as the audience cheered them on.
City Manager Stephen Dunn had outlined a plan – which included three dates – for the town hall meetings. The plan and structure was criticized by some on the council which resulted in city leaders later agreeing to only set a date for the Saturday meeting.
