UPLAND >> Former Upland Mayor John Pomierski will be released from prison Tuesday, five months earlier than expected for federal bribery charges, his attorney said.

Pomierski, 60, will be released from state prison in Taft in Kern County.

“JP is going to move forward with his life. He wants to come back and be a productive member of society,” said Bob Schauer, Pomierski’s attorney.

Pomierski was scheduled to be released in late June but, Schauer said, it was determined several months ago that he would be released early based on “good conduct.”

In March 2011, federal agents arrested Pomierski and charged him with conspiracy, bribery and extortion, accusing him of demanding bribes from unnamed Upland businesses.

In 2012, Pomierski accepted a plea bargain before his case could go to trial and he was sentenced to two years in prison for accepting a $5,000 bribe in return for the city’s granting of a permit to a local business.
