GRAND TERRACE >> Council members have decided to leave the seat of Bernardo Sandoval open until the November elections.
After seeking interested candidates, council members on Tuesday interviewed Doug Wilson, Ryan Stephens and Richard Sanchez.
Each candidate was interviewed for 20 minutes and about a dozen citizens spoke on their behalf.
But after one deadlock vote the City Council agreed to leave the position open until the November General Election.
“My fear, and you can see with what happened with this, is that we’ll be in a 2-2 deadlock and nothing,” said Mayor Walt Stanckiewitz. “We’re going to have to learn how to make the right decisions for the community.”
Sandoval resigned to become the director of information technology for United Health Group at the Jan. 14 council meeting.
Interested candidates had until Feb. 5 to apply for Sandoval’s seat, which expires in November.
Candidates were then interviewed during the City Council meeting on Tuesday.

“McNaboe made a motion to choose Wilson to fill the empty seat, and Councilwoman Sylvia Robles seconded the motion, but the other two council members didn’t agree.”
