BIG BEAR LAKE • Big Bear Lake Mayor Jay Obernolte touted his combination of business and political experience, saying it sets him apart from the field, as he announced on Monday his bid for the 33rd Assembly District.

“No one currently has that combination,” Obernolte said by phone.

He founded FarSight Studios, a multi-platform video game developer, more than 25 years ago while attending Caltech. The company can claim Sony, Microsoft, Google and Apple among its clients and currently employs 25 Big Bear-area residents, according to a news release.

He is also in his ninth year of elected office and maintains seats on several Big Bear Lake and regional boards, including the Big Bear Fire Authority the Mojave Desert and Mountain Integrated Waste JPA Board, where he is director.

It’s that combination of business and political savvy, he says, that makes him most qualified to lobby in Sacramento for job growth in the High Desert, also the centerpiece to his platform.

“I think solving the economic problems we’re facing is going to require a business-like approach,” he said, “and also require political experience to get anything accomplished.”

He is critical of what he called a “dysfunctional” state government rife with “out-of-control spending.”
